Secretarial Support
Each faculty member is entitled to secretarial support as a condition of his contract. Secretaries are assigned at the discretion of Joanie Nyland and Rebecca Lovely, with the approval of Dr. Gravenstein. Some secretaries are Shands employees and some are UF employees, but all are limited to working 40 hour weeks.
It is appropriate for secretaries to word process reports, business correspondence, grant proposals, lectures, and manuscripts. Secretaries open mail depending upon the faculty member’s desires. Secretaries schedule meetings and appointments, greet visitors and handle telephone calls.
Department policy dictates secretaries work no more than 40
hours. The department does not pay overtime. Most secretaries
work for multiple faculty members so advanced planning,
especially with lectures and grants, works to everyone’s benefit
and less stress. Secretaries do not perform any personal chores
for the faculty member on department time or dollars. If a
faculty member would like assistance after work hours with
personal business and/or legal work, and the secretary agrees,
the faculty member must be prepared to provide compensation from
his own pocket.
