Attendance Policy
Employees are expected to report to work as scheduled. Abuse of leave time will be determined by the employee's immediate supervisor, giving consideration to the circumstances and the level of workflow interruption.
Vacation leave must be approved in advance by the immediate supervisor. Optimally, an employee should never use more vacation leave than is accrued.
An employee who is unexpectedly absent must notify his supervisor or the appropriate department contact at the beginning of the work shift.
Employees are required to call in on a daily basis during an unscheduled absence, unless a specific exception is made by the supervisor.
Employees returning to work after an illness or injury, who have been absent from work for five or more days may be required to bring a medical certificate.
An employee's attendance becomes unacceptable when review of his record shows:
(1) more than six occurrences of unscheduled absences in a six-month period. The six months is determined using a rolling calendar, ie counting back from the most recent incident. An occurrence is each day of absence. A multi-day absence may be counted as a single occurrence providing the appropriate notice was provided to the supervisor.
or
(2) there is a defined pattern ( three or more occurrences) of calling in sick on consecutive Mondays, Fridays, or days before/after a holiday.
FMLA and Worker's Compensation are not counted as occurrences under this policy.
Doctor, dentist, and therapy appointments are not counted as occurrences, however, if the number of appointments appears to be excessive, the supervisor may require a medical certificate. With the supervisor's permission, an employee may be allowed to make up the missed work time for appointments, in lieu of using sick leave.
