Gulf-Atlantic Anesthesia Resident
Research Conference (GAARRC)
GAARRC is a professional meeting for resident physicians to
present research data to resident physicians from anesthesiology
programs located in the southeastern United States. This meeting
is designed to be low-key and without stress in order to provide
opportunities for resident physicians to speak publicly about
their research interests and activities to other resident, some
for the very first time (no faculty presentations are allowed).
Typically, GAARRC occurs over one weekend (Friday-Sunday) in
April of each year with the meeting location rotated around the
southeastern US and is sponsored by the university programs.
Some previous meetings have been recently sited in Miami, FL;
St. Augustine, FL; Atlanta, GA; New Orleans, LA; Chapel Hill,
NC; Charleston, SC, Galveston, TX and others. For resident
physicians (especially international colleagues) who have not
toured the Southeast, it is allows an opportunity for a
supervised, safe travel experience as a faculty chaperone
accompanies the group.
At the meeting, each resident uses 10 min to describe his
research interest in one of three structured formats:
1. Case Presentation (most frequent)
2. Original Science
3. Case Review (least frequent)
Presentations are co-developed with faculty supervision with
awards for best presentations in each category from among
100-125 resident talks.
As for expenses, the department considers this meeting a special
case for residents and actively encourages its young physicians
to attend. Independent of resident physician book/travel
allowance, the department pays for the following for any
resident presenting a talk: registration, travel, lodging for
one night (i.e., room with a buddy and the hotel is free for
both nights), graphical and editorial support.
