DON'T LET OTHERS USE OUR DEPARTMENTAL COMPUTERS
Please note that you are not allowed to share your username and password with others. That also means your close relatives that you trust and love. We do not have the support resources to fix computers that were messed up because children were allowed to use our departmental computers. Did you know you can get a computer with LCD screen at Walmart for < $400?
IS YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION SAFE?
Most of us have provided personal information over the Internet. Most of us know that we should only do this when needed and only when the connection is encrypted, as indicated by https and the closed lock at the bottom of our web browser. That does not however guarantee that our information is safe. When given the option, do not store credit card numbers with the vendors for future use. When possible, use a one-time-use or limited-use credit card. Do not provide your social security number if it is not needed.
There have been some recent thefts of personal information. Here is a big story: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6969799/ You should also check if your social security number is not present on any public records. SSNs used to be required on the deed for your house. Alachua county now has these records online on the Internet: http://www.clerk-alachua-fl.org/clerk/pubrec.html Search for your public records, and look at deeds with scanned images (icon in the image column). Click on it and retrieve as PDF. Make sure there are no SSNs present. If there are, note the "Instrument number" from the list and send an email to the Clerk of the court. They will only remove them by request.
