Performance Evaluation

Evaluation of Residents by Faculty: The Clinical Competence Committee consists of faculty members chosen by the Chairman and Associate Chair for Education who are tasked with collating and analyzing all evaluations for presentation to the American Board of Anesthesiology in the form of a Clinical Competence Report. This report is sent every six months and forms the basis by which the American Board of Anesthesiology grants credit for clinical training. Residents are evaluated by the faculty using the department’s web-based resident evaluation system on a weekly basis. Any faculty member at Shands, FSC, or the VAMC who worked with a particular resident on a case will be sent an e-mail indicating that he needs to complete a web evaluation form. The results and all comments are stored in a Microsoft Access database. The committee meets every three months to review resident performance, but information is actually only sent to the ABA every six months, covering the preceding six month time period. Faculty advisors also receive the information generated by the committee at its quarterly meetings and will help the resident understand the basis for any of the committee’s decisions. Each faculty member is REQUIRED to meet with his resident at least twice a year to review performance. A quarterly meeting may not occur if no problems are identified, but residents can meet with their advisors about their performance at any time. The residents have direct access to the results of their web-based evaluations at all times. The results are reported numerically with:

1 = Outstanding performance
2 = Good performance
3 = Acceptable performance
4 = Doubtful performance
5 = Unacceptable performance.

Any time a resident receives a doubtful or unacceptable score, the web-based reporting system indicates it to the resident. Residents who do not understand why can contact Dr. Mahla or their faculty advisors, and the reasons for the poor evaluation will be shared directly.

March 1st is the date by which residents are notified of either promotion to the following level or non-renewal of contract for the following academic year. Promotion is dependent on the resident achieving the following:

  1. Acquiring the knowledge base and clinical skills expected for level of training and as outlined in the goals and objectives for each rotation and training level.
  2. High moral, ethical and behavioral standards
  3. Satisfactory clinical competence reports
  4. Acceptable performance on the annual ASA/ABA In-training examination.

Failure to satisfy the above criteria will result in academic probation. Residents placed on probation will be given a letter of probation containing specific documentation of deficiencies and specific written goals and objectives to correct noted deficiencies. A time period to correct the deficiencies will also be noted. If subsequent evaluations indicate that the deficiencies have been corrected, the resident will be returned to good standing and promoted accordingly. If subsequent evaluations fail to indicate improvement within the allotted time specified in the letter of probation, termination will result. Any MAJOR departure from acceptable resident performance may result in immediate termination without a probationary period. Due process of appeal will be given to all residents according to University of Florida Grievance Procedures.

Evaluation of Rotations and Faculty by Residents: Residents are also required to anonymously evaluate clinical rotations following the completion of a given rotation. The evaluation form is web based and may be accessed by going to the following web site: link to Department Menu.

There are two types of faculty evaluations. One is done monthly (Faculty Evaluation Form) and is based on the contact residents have with faculty during that period. The resident will only be asked to evaluate faculty members with whom he has worked in the operating room. Faculty may review their evaluations at any time by accessing our Departmental Application Web Page.

When you get there, you will need to LOGIN. To do so, enter your social security number with dashes. Your initial password is the first letter of your last name (lowercase) followed immediately by the last 4 digits of your social security number. The first time you LOGIN, you will be told your password has expired. Return to the Departmental Applications Menu and change your password. You should then be set to go. For security purposes, you will periodically be asked to change your password.

The other faculty evaluation is required by the College of Medicine. Residents complete this evaluation twice per year on as many faculty with whom they had sufficient contact in any way to evaluate. This evaluation assesses faculty performance not only in the operating room but also in all other aspects of academic life here at the University of Florida (e.g. lectures, advising ability, mentoring, research, administrative skills, etc.). The College of Medicine faculty evaluation is also web-based and anonymous.

The chairman completes an annual evaluation for each faculty member in April, encompassing the appraisal period of April 1 through March 31.
