Grant Proposals
The Department of Anesthesiology encourages original research in anesthesia and related areas and supports selected projects. However, investigators are also encouraged to seek outside sources of support from the University or from federal, state, or private institutions and organizations.
The grant proposal will be of high quality only if sufficient time is allowed for typing several drafts, editing, correcting, proofreading, obtaining signature approvals from several offices, copying, and collating. Although the quality of the research idea should, of course, be the single most important element, the influence of a well-organized and persuasively presented grant proposal cannot be overestimated.
A faculty member should notify his secretary of the appropriate deadlines as soon as he decides to write a grant so that she may monitor the preparation timetable. Please remember that your secretary provides services for multiple faculty members and may be engaged in the preparation and routing of more than just one grant. Advance planning helps everyone work efficiently.
Mary Simpson provides assistance with budget proposals. Mike Nyland reviews all proposed budgets prior to obtaining the Chairman’s signature.
The Division of Sponsored Research (DSR) has a web site at http://rgp.ufl.edu/research that provides listings of funding opportunities, forms, and a researcher’s handbook to assist the faculty member in successfully obtaining grants. The College of Medicine also has a useful web site on research linked to our department's home page.
MEETING YOUR DEADLINE
Dean’s Office. The final grant proposal with all required signatures should be in the Dean’s Office at least 3-5 days before the granting agency deadline.
DSR. DSR must review and approve all grant proposals before submission. DSR will review, duplicate, and mail the proposal if given the time to do so. DSR deadline is two (2) full working days before agency deadline. All applicants are reminded that the agency deadline must be clearly indicated on the signature page, including the date and type of deadline (postmark or receipt).
Any revision to the grant must be processed through the same
channels as your original grant request. It is often necessary to revise a
budget request, which must then be approved by the Department Chairman, the
Dean’s Office, and DSR.
In summary, it is most important to note that there are several offices
requiring firm deadlines; therefore, it is imperative to allow sufficient
time for each.
