FACET HistoryThe formation of the FACET group can be accredited to J.S. Gravenstein, M.D. who returned to the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Florida in 1979 to accept the position of Graduate Research Professor. With his guidance, the department expanded its monitoring efforts and strengthened its engineering support. This facilitated the introduction of computers in the support of various clinical studies. These activities raised interest among faculty and residents and a team with a common objective began to develop: the identification of problem areas in anesthesia and how computer applications and engineering technology could assist in resolving these problems. Dr. Gravenstein recruited Jan E. W. Beneken, Ph.D., Professor and Chairman of the Medical Electrical Engineering Department at Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands, who joined the part time faculty in 1983 and augmented the team with his extensive expertise. Over the years, the team has grown and currently consists of over 25 full - and part-time engineers, six physicians, and the all-important administrative support. There is more information on present and future. |
