About the Department
The Department of Anesthesiology, part of the College of Medicine, is located at the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville. Shands Hospital, the major teaching hospital at UF's Health Sciences Center, is a 600-bed level one trauma center with over 100 intensive care beds. Our faculty and residents also practice at the regional 250 bed VA Medical Center across the street. Shands at Alachua General Hospital is a 300-bed community hospital emphasizing outpatient and orthopedic services and Florida Surgical Center is an eight operating room out patient surgical center. Combined we care for over 30,000 patients per year in our operating rooms and hundreds more in the various ICUs we serve.
Shands hospital will open an additional 200-bed Trauma and Cancer tower in 2009.
Shands at UF features four clinical "Centers of Excellence," including: Cancer, Cardiovascular medicine, Neurological services, and Transplantation.
The Department is composed of 60 clinical faculty, five research faculty, 75 residents, 12 fellows, 40 mid-level providers and a support and administrative staff of 35 people. It is a world renowned academic department that typically publishes at least one book, more than 50 manuscripts and book chapters and is granted at least 4 U. S. patents each year. The Department is ranked in the 90th percentile nationally in terms of extramural research funding.
Multiple fellowship trained faculty cover each clinical subspecialty discipline including: Critical Care Medicine, pediatric, congenital cardiac, adult cardiac, neurosurgery, pain, obstetric, regional and acute pain, clinical and didactic activities. Research interests of the faculty span clinical, basic science/nanotechnological, simulation and interactive World Wide Web projects.
Gainesville consistently ranks in the top 10 lists of desirable places to live by various magazines and ranking services. It is a medium sized city in North Central Florida with a native population of approximately 180,000. The additional 50,000 University of Florida and 20,000 junior college students bring the total population to 250,000 people. It has the general atmosphere of a college town, where both housing costs and sales taxes are low compared to most areas of the country and there is no state income tax. Gainesville does have seasons, with a mild winter, pleasant spring and fall, and a typical southern summer.
The University of Florida is the fourth-largest university in the nation. UF is a major, public, comprehensive, land-grant research university. It is among the nation’s most academically diverse and is home to 16 colleges and more than 150 research centers and institutes. The January 2008 Kiplinger’s list of the nations 100 Best Values in Public Colleges ranks UF at No. 2.
