INTRODUCTION

Computer applications and information management ARE an integral part of the clinical practice of the anesthesiologist. Anesthetic records are becoming computer based, anesthesia monitoring devices function at the current level of sophistication thanks to computers and patient information is being consolidated and integrated in clinical information systems. Increasingly, computer based decision support systems assist clinicians in their clinical practice, and computers provide access to pertinent information, previously difficult to obtain.

Because computer applications have moved away from the traditionally administrative use and are pervasive not only in our personal life but also in the medical field, we prepared this handout and prepared a one week lecture block for our residents. This handout focuses on the principles of computing and the applications as these TOOLS help the clinical professional in the workplace.

In the first part of this handout elementary computer basics will be covered. Next, we'll introduce the Medical Professionals to the "Information Highway" with ample opportunity the explore on your own. Electronic Mail will be covered and we'll go into training devices, continuing medical education, and Decision Support Systems.

We hope that these notes serve as a reference that you can go back to in case of questions. Only during hands-on trial-and-error sessions you will see the action. Enjoy!
