The Gopher is a client-server based distributed document search and retrieval system. Users of Gopher can browse, search, and retrieve documents located at distributed servers. Using a Gopher system is as easy as making selections from a menu; some menus selections give you a new menu to select from, while other selections display the document you requested or initiate a Telnet or FTP session. The power of the Gopher system is that each menu item can transparently connect you to another gopher system that may be anywhere on the Internet. The Gopher system was originally developed by the University of Minnesota in 1991 and quickly Gopher clients became available for a number of computer hardware platforms and the Gopher quickly grew into a full-fledged world wide information system. Gopher clients for the PC and other platforms can be obtained via anonymous FTP from boombox.micro.umn.edu and look in the directory pub/gopher.
