Computers are
nowadays an integral part of our lives. Few of us still remember that it has
only been 50 years since the first electronic computer (ENIAC) was operational.
This computer weighed 30 tons, required more than 1500 square feet of floor
space, and contained well over 18,000 vacuum tubes and more than 500 miles of
wiring inside. Today's computers have undergone revolutionary changes in size,
speed, power consumption, cost, and capabilities. Computers are widespread,
pervading almost every aspect of our lives, including the practice of medicine.
Every day, more innovative uses for computers are being developed for
physicians. These applications range from administrative systems supporting the
clinical practice, information systems, smart infusion pumps, and self contained
training devices to full-scale anesthesia simulators.
