Modem Connections to the Internet

There are means to make your computer at home a node on the Internet; you are not logged into a computer (such as America onLine or CompuServe), but you are directly connected to the Internet by means of a special dial-up service: SLIP or PPP. SLIP (Serial Line IP) is a method for transmitting IP packets (see Internet section) over regular phone lines with a modem. PPP (Point to Point Protocol) is an alternative method for accomplishing the same thing. There are modem programs out there, both for the PC and MacIntosh computers, that use SLIP or PPP to establish and maintain a connection to this dial-up service. After establishing this connection you can run your favorite Web browser program, performs FTP's or connect to newsgroups from home.
