Networking software needs to be loaded on the computers connected to the network to access it. Many different protocols (ways to "talk" to the network) exist, but what they all have in common is that they send packets of information. All the information that is send to the network or that is received from it is divided into packet. How information is stored in the packets is defined by the protocol. The two most popular protocols are TCP/IP (used by the Internet) and IPX/SPX (used by a Novell network). When computers are carefully setup two or more protocols can exist at the same time. This means that you can access a Novell network and access the Internet all on the same computer.
