| Dr. Layon is the Chief of the Division, a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology (1988), and holds a certificate of special qualifications in Critical Care Medicine (1989). Dr. Layon is also a Diplomate in the American Board of Internal Medicine (1984). He completed his Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Florida in 1984. Dr. Layon has previously directed the Emergency Room at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, and is currently the Medical Director for the City of Gainesville’s Fire Rescue Service. He has also been a member of the Critical Care Medicine faculty since 1984. His special interests include burn therapy, sepsis, ethics, and outcomes research. |

T. James Gallagher, MD, FCCM |
Dr. Gallagher was Chief of this Division from 1981 to 2003. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology (1978) and holds a certificate of special qualifications in Critical Care Medicine (1986). He completed his Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Miami in 1976. He has previously been President of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, President of the Florida Society of Critical Care Medicine, and President of the American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists. Dr. Gallagher is an Oral Examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology. His current research interests include sepsis, transfusion therapy, and respiratory failure. |

Dr. Gabrielli is a Diplomate of the Italian Board of General Surgery, the American Board of Anesthesiology and holds a certificate of special qualifications in Critical Care Medicine. He completed Fellowships in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 1992 and in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Florida in 1993. Dr. Gabrielli is the Medical Director of the Hyperbaric Chamber at Shands Hospital and the Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy at the University of Florida. His clinical research interests include critical care medicine, liver transplantation, vascular and cardiac anesthesia, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, hyperbaric medicine and mechanical ventilation. Dr. Gabrielli is a member of the American Heart Association National Basic Life Support Committee and the Educational Committee of the American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiology. |

Lawrence J. Caruso, MD |
Dr. Caruso is a Diplomate in the American Board of Anesthesiology (1997), and holds a certificate of special qualifications in Critical Care Medicine (1997). He completed his Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Florida in 1997. Dr. Caruso divides his time between the operating room, the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, and the Intermediate Care Unit.His research interests include nutritional support, sepsis, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. |
Dr. Peters is a former naval aviator and has also practiced many years as an Emergency Room physician. He is a graduate of the University of Florida. |
