Accomplishments: Jerome H. Modell, M.D., D.Sc. (Hon.) joined the University of Florida as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology in 1969, a position he held for more than 23 years. Under his direction, the department grew from very small beginnings to become recognized as one of the largest and most prestigious in the nation. In 1992, Dr. Modell retired from the chairmanship of the Department to accept various administrative positions in the Offices of the Dean of the College of Medicine and Vice President for Health Affairs. In 2000, he officially retired from the University of Florida, but since has served as a Professor Emeritus, both in the Colleges of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. As such, he volunteers full-time in administering anesthesia, teaching medical and veterinary students and anesthesiology residents, doing research and mentoring faculty in both colleges.

During the course of his career, Dr. Modell contributed chapters to over 70 books and published more than 200 refereed scientific papers, competitive abstracts, invited papers and editorials. He also has given approximately 250 scientific presentations by invitation or competition throughout North America and abroad on 5 continents.

Dr. Modell has been extremely active in anesthesiology and critical care societies both nationally and internationally, having served as chairman of multiple committees, and on councils and boards of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, Florida Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society of Academic Anesthesia Chairs, the Association of University Anesthesiologists, the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Chest Physicians, to name a few. He also has served as a consultant and site visitor for the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Defense, and on committees of the National Academy of Sciences and of the Florida Legislature. In addition, Dr. Modell has been president of the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists, Society of Academic Anesthesia Chairs, and Association of University Anesthesiologists. The honors that Dr. Modell has received, both nationally and internationally, are too numerous to mention in this brief summary of his career. His autobiography has been published as part of the “Careers in Anesthesiology” series by the Wood Library Museum of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
